Transformation

Købmagergade 39

Year: 2016

This project called for the complete transformation of a dilapidated office building from 1780 into modern apartments along with the renovation of the existing retail space on the ground floor and its extension to the level above.

Our role as an architect, engineer and consultant included design, planning, technical upgradation and its execution along with new terraces.

Rebirth of a building

The apartments are characterized by large open kitchens and bright, airy rooms creating a comfortable atmosphere. This is amplified by the series of stepped terraces over the courtyard, a quiet oasis for the occupants in the middle of the city. This allows every tenant to have ample daylight and creates a good indoor environment.

The existing shop on ground floor was given a new life by large windows allowing more visual connection to the street as well as letting more daylight inside. The extension of the retail space to the first floor was done through a new open staircase. This created an easy flow through the whole space, which has been let out in its entirety.

Historic expression and details

The original façade had a number of rosettes set between the ground and first floor. We retained these motifs after painting and plastering.

To equip the apartments with modern comforts, a new staircase and elevator tower was constructed, tying the whole building together.
